In this video today we’re going to talk about earning respect, versus given respect. This is where athletes will lace up some shoes, or put on a uniform and think that makes them a basketball player. We are going to address that…
Earning vs. Given Respect
We use the platform of basketball to talk about the game of life, but in the game of basketball, things are earned. I see where people will value the game more than practice, don’t value the process, don’t value their coach, but think they are going to make it to the top.
One thing that is if you disrespect the game of basketball, it will disrespect you back. That’s just how it is. This game will chew you up, it’ll spit you out, and it won’t even think twice about you. Make sure that you are receiving respect and earning respect.
How Do You Earn Your Respect in the Game of Basketball?
One, coachable. You have to be able to receive information, take constructive criticism, and be able to use it in a positive manner.
If you haven’t accomplished anything yet, then you should be coachable. Even when you have accomplishments, LeBron is a great example, What keeps that guy motivated?
He’s earned the respect of his peers, however, he’s had a whole bunch of accomplishments. I don’t want to bring up only the high level, but some people want to play on the high level, but most don’t understand what they sacrifice to get to that high level.
Getting Respect From Your Peers
You gotta get the respect of your coaches, your players/teammates. If you are in college or high school, you got to get the respect of that organization or school to be able to play at that high level.
You can’t walk-in and think that somebody’s going to respect you, you’ll have to go out there and earn it, and it’ll be with your play.
You earn it with your attitude, hard work that you put in, and dedication that you put into the game. Whatever time that you put into the game, it will give back to you.
Value practice more than the games. For example, I see times where parents/athletes say, “Oh, I’ll just catch you at the game, I won’t be at practice.”
That is a habit that is unacceptable in the game of basketball, and in the game of life, because what is it that you are teaching that athlete? They can come to the games but they’re not going to come to practice.
You can use that on outside of basketball too. “I’m not going to show up to work today, but I’ll show up when payday arrives.” You are going to get fired, you’re not going to have a job.
You gotta make sure that if you want respect, and earn the respect of the game of basketball. You have to be coachable, work well with your team and your teammates, and have a positive attitude.
